If you are covering dependents under any applicable benefits program, they must meet certain eligibility requirements. Dependents include:

  • Your legal spouse/domestic partner
    • Coverage for a Domestic Partner: Employees may cover their domestic partner on their benefits however, the federal government does not recognize domestic partnerships and therefore the benefits for the domestic partner become taxable income for the employee. Imputed income is the value of the benefits provided to the employee that will be taxed. Imputed income is calculated using the difference between the total cost (employee plus employer premium) of employee and employee + domestic partner coverage for each of the benefits elected.
  • Your child or your spouse’s/domestic partner’s child who is under age 26, regardless of marital, student, or employment status
    • The term “child” includes any of the following:
  • Biological child
  • Stepchild
  • Legally adopted child
  • Child placed for adoption
  • Child for whom legal guardianship has been awarded to the employee or the employee’s spouse
